Design & Implementation of a Sound Attenuation System for an Environmental Noise Control Application

A Five-Star resort needed a way to reduce the output noise levels from their generators and cooling towers thus enabling them to operate this equipment on a full time basis in compliance with local noise regulations. Acoustical Systems, Inc. designed an acoustical solution that would provide the necessary noise reduction for the adjacent community while allowing the Five-Star resort to operate its generators on a 24/7 basis. The key to this design was to provide the necessary noise reduction in a package that would fit in the space available and also provide the necessary ventilation for the two large generators.

Starting with an in-depth community noise assessment, we monitored the sound levels at several points along the property line to determine the current noise levels under different operating conditions. We found that noise levels exceeded the requirements as set by the Hindrance Permit. The noise sources were reverberating off of the hard surfaces in the parking garage area, and transmitting to adjacent areas creating unacceptable increased noise. After gathering information a thorough acoustical engineering feasibility study was prepared, outlining our noise abatement plan consisting of custom-designed enclosures and louvers. The plan was agreed upon and we sourced the necessary materials, fabricating panels rated to meet the required specification that the noise level not exceed 55 dB(A) during the day, and 45 dB(A) at night.

The enclosure ventilation system was unique, as it did not use a fan to circulate air. The design also considered such details as proper access and structural considerations including wind loads. The materials were weather resistant, protecting the system from the area’s harsh environmental conditions. Because we are not affiliated with or endorse particular product lines, we are able to offer the right products as necessary according to the situation.

Our in-process testing included incremental benchmark sound level measurements at different milestones. Post installation performance verification was also carried out to ensure the abatement plan was successful and our design goal was met. Turnaround time for this project was 17 months, delivered and installed in St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles.
