Community noise studies
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this program are threefold: 1. Determine the existing noise levels around the facility as well as the adjacent areas of concern. 2. Identify the noise sources prompting the complaints from the adjacent neighborhoods. 3. Recommend noise abatement measures to the noise sources identified and predict resulting noise levels upon implementation of abatement measures. 1. Determine the Existing Conditions Many community noise problems are very subjective. An individuals ability to hear, meteorological conditions, time of year, measurement location, and operating conditions of the facility are all variables which effect the actual or perceived problem. The project will typically start with Acoustical Systems meeting with all of the parties concerned with the project. This could be representatives of the city or state enforcement group, and local neighbors that have complaints. |

Based on the preliminary meetings and tour of the facility and area of concern, Acoustical Systems will determine the conditions and locations under which data should be collected. This will include different times of day, different atmospheric conditions, and different plant operating conditions. All measurements will be acquired utilizing precision sound and vibration instrumentation, which meets the latest standards and specifications. The data collected will then be analyzed to determine the noise level being produced by the facility at locations under study. Background noise calculations would be performed in accordance with applicable means and methods. 2. Identify Noise Sources |
Individual noise sources must be isolated in order to determine the component each adds to the overall noise level at each location under study. This is determined through several methods including:
3. Recommend Noise Abatement |
Once individual sources have been identified, Acoustical Systems will develop practical engineering controls to abate the noise. Concept designs will be reviewed with management and maintenance personnel to develop a solution that will reduce the noise, minimize impact on maintenance, and minimize the cost. When the concept designs have been developed, a final report documenting existing noise levels and sources, recommendations, concept designs, material costs, and predicted noise levels after implementation will be submitted. Once noise abatement is implemented, Acoustical Systems can measure the actual noise levels to verify the prediction in the final report. PROGRAM SUMMARY |
The emphasis of this program is to provide the acoustical engineering necessary to define the existing conditions causing the complaints. In addition, the sources of the complaints will be identified and practical noise control solutions which will achieve the noise abatement required will be designed. The emphasis is also on developing solutions that will have a minimal effect on the normal operation and maintenance of the equipment being acoustically treated. |
